Permaculture in Humboldt

Local permaculture instructor Levon Durr talks about the seed and scion exchange that the Humboldt Permaculture Guild is putting on at the Arcata Community Center on March 11 from 11 to 4. He also gives a history of permaculture courses in our region, many of which he has co-taught, and how the practice of permaculture has changed since he began teaching in the 1990’s.

People and groups mentioned by Levon:

North Coast Growers Association is a membership organization of farmers, ranchers, food producers, and makers of artisan goods. Ivy North is NCGA’s Agricultural Programs Director.

Locally Delicious engages in education and projects that increase production of local organic food. Ann Anderson has a book with the same name.

Cooperation Humboldt supports local economic development in harmony with nature through existing cooperative efforts and new solutions where needed. Argy Muñoz is on Cooperation Humboldt’s staff and the North Coast Community Gardens Cooperative's Steering Committee.

Redwood Community Action Agency empowers low and moderate income residents of Humboldt County to become self-sufficient. Matt Drummond is a National Reporting System Planner at RCAA.

Coalition for Responsible Transportation Priorities (CRTP) promotes transportation that supports community and environmental health in the North Coast.

Trees Foundation is one of ISF’s primary fiscal sponsors, with a mission to restore the ecological integrity of the North Coast.

Environmental Protection Information Center educates, advocates and litigates for the protection and restoration of forests, rivers and wildlife.

Greywater systems that divert laundry and shower water to the landscape are promoted by many groups, including Greywater Action, where you can also learn about rainwater catchment.

Michael Smith builds with natural materials, such as cob, and teaches workshops about that.

“Brock” is Brock Dolman, permaculture instructor at Occidental Arts and Ecology Center. He said this about gullies to Pat Higgins on Monday Morning Magazine this past December.

“Penny” is Penny Livingston, formerly of the Regenerative Design Institute in Bolinas, now living in Washington State.

Bill Mollison (1928–2016) is the main progenitor and original teacher of all permaculture courses worldwide, beginning with his books Permaculture One and Permaculture Two in the late 1970s.

Scott Pittman (1940–2022) co-founded The Permaculture Institute in Santa Fe in 1977.

Hazel Ward (formerly Tom Ward) teaches social forestry through Siskiyou Permaculture in Little Applegate, OR. He co-taught with Bill Mollison in the early days.

Dan Mar runs High Tide Permaculture.

Steven Saint Thomas and Trudy Thomas operate The 4th Wave Permaculture in McKinleyville.

And of course, Levon's home base is the Humboldt Permaculture Guild.
